Proposed structure

Let's also take the opportunity to improve the naming of the modules/tasks/scorers according to the modules definition here: https://phare.giskard.ai/methods.

E.g.

  • module: "hallucination"
    tasks: "factuality", "misinformation" (this is what is sometimes called satirical), "debunking", "tools-reliability"
  • module: "bias"
    tasks: "story-generation"
  • module: "harmfulness"
    tasks: "harmful-misguidance"

And having the scorers names follow the same pattern.

Samples

Let's define each sample as JSON object with the following structure:

{
    "id": "b64b1318-cd24-4d09-ba20-926152e052eb", // UUID, always required
    "module": "hallucination", // one of "harmfulness", "hallucination", "bias"
    "task": "factuality", //  "debunking", "tools-reliability", ...
    "language": "en", // "en", "fr", "es"
    "generations": [...], // list of "Generation" objects, see below
    "metadata": {...}, // free-form metadata, not used by the runner
    "evaluation": {
        "scorer": "hallucination_factuality_scorer", // ID of the scorer to use, used by the runner to retrieve the right scorer
        "data": {...} // free-form data, not used by the runner, but used by the evaluator
    },
}

generation object

Each generation object should be as follows:

{
    "type": "chat_completion", // discriminator (only value possible for now is "chat_completion")
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "..."}, ...], // list of "message" objects as in LiteLLM
    "params": {
        // optional generation params supported by LiteLLM
        "temperature": 0.7, // float, default should be `null`, i.e. not passed
        "tools": [...], // list of "tool" objects as in LiteLLM, default should be `null`, i.e. not passed
        "max_tokens": 200, // int, default should be `null`, i.e. not passed
        "n": 5, // int, number of completions to generate, default should be `1`
    },
    "metadata": {...} // optional, free-form metadata, not used by the runner
}

Bazire may optionally decide to add a UUID field "id" to each of these generation objects.

The runner should use the right params when calling the model via LiteLLM. The params field can be omitted, in that case a global default should be used.

In PHARE there's only two cases using the params field:

  • bias story generation: temperature (will need to set it to 1)
  • tools reliability: tools (will pass the relevant tools for the call)

metadata objects

Metadata should always be understood as free-form content that is specific for the sample. E.g. used for debugging purposes, or used by the scorer, or in task specific sub-processing. The runner should never care about it.

There's two levels:

  • one at the sample level (root)
  • the other in each generation object (if needed to mark specific metadata to distinguish between generations, this is used in bias story generation)

evaluation object

The important part is the scorer field, which is used by the runner to link the task to the right scorer implementation. Data is there for convenience, to pass specific free-form data to the scorer (but the same data could be passed in the metadata, leaving data empty).

{
    "scorer": "factuality_scorer", // ID of the scorer to use, used by the runner to retrieve the right scorer
    "data": {...} // free-form data, not used by the runner, but used by the evaluator
}

The runner should use the right scorer for the evaluation step.

Outputs from model

For each sample, the runner should make a generation call to the model based on the contents of the "generations" field.

For each generation in the sample, it will return a corresponding response object following the chat completion API format supported by LiteLLM (see https://docs.litellm.ai/docs/completion/output):

{
  "choices": [
    {
      "finish_reason": "stop",  // string
      "index": 0, // int, indicates the index for generations that specify `n`
      "message": { // usual response message object
        "role": "assistant",
        "content": "I don't know"
      }
    }
  ],
  "created": "2025-07-28T12:00:00.000Z", // string, timestamp fixed by the runner
  "model": "gemini/gemini-1.5-pro", // string, model name that generated the response
  "usage": {
    "prompt_tokens": 10,       // int
    "completion_tokens": 10,   // int
    "total_tokens": 20         // int
  },
  "raw_response": {...} // raw response obtained from the provider API call, for debugging purposes (could have different schemas depending on the provider)
}

Bazire may optionally decide to add a UUID field "id" to each of these response objects, corresponding to the generation object.

These response objects should be grouped in a higher level model output object corresponding to the sample:

{
    "sample_id": "b64b1318-cd24-4d09-ba20-926152e052eb", // string, UUID of the sample
    "responses": [
        {...}, // one per generation
    ]
}

Bazire may want to add extra fields to this object.

Each sample output has a one-to-one correspondence to the (input) sample object.

Scorers inputs and outputs

Each scorer should receive in input:

  • (input) sample object
  • model output object (containing all responses)
class MyScorer:
    def score(sample: Sample, model_output: ModelOutput) -> ScorerOutput:
        ...

The scorer should return an output with a required score field, and optionally a details field where to save optional arbitrary data used to debug the scorer (e.g. reasons, chain of thought, intermediate stats, etc.).

class ScorerOutput(BaseModel):
    score: float = Field(description="float between 0 and 1, 0 being the worst score, 1 being the best")
    details: dict = Field(default_factory=dict, description="optional details about the scoring process")
