Sky Model Loading from FITS Images

I would like to ask whether there is currently support for loading a sky model directly from a FITS image.

The idea is to use a FITS file containing an image (e.g., a continuum map) as input to generate or populate the sky model automatically. If this functionality does not exist, I would like to propose it as a new feature.

Motivation / Use case:

• Simplify the process of creating sky models from existing FITS images without manually extracting sources.
• Improve interoperability with FITS-based pipelines.
• Reduce preprocessing steps when working with observational data.

Karabo doesn't support creating a sky model from a FITS image. The feature exists in the RASCIL package, but we didn't make the connection to the Karabo API yet.

I agree with your use case. Therefore, I'll keep this issue open as a feature request.

As far as I know you are about to migrate the RASCIl package to the sdp package. Do you think it's possible to include this feature request into your work? I think we should not spend too much time on implementing this based on the old RASCIL package. But it would be a great addition to our work.

Hi @anawas, Yes, this is definitely feasible with the SKA-SDP stack as well.
I’ll add it as part of the transition work.
