Thumbnails for Creative Work Series

WHAT?

Our current Creative Work Series TNs are ready for a new look. We have some potential options/ideas in mind...

1. Default to the first child object in sequence
2. Allow user to select one object from children to use as TN.

HOW?

2. Set at the Parent level a Webform Element that allows you to choose any object from the children, but with the addition of autocomplete OR provide a checkbox that reads "Use as thumbnail" for every child.

We have a solution working. It entails a bunch of moving parts:

• A solr field for "parent_id" which indexes both ismemberof and ispartof.
• A new "Thumbnail Only" metadatadisplay template which, given an ADO, returns a <img> tag for just its thumbnail.
• A new entity view mode "Thumbnail Only", enabled for digital_object.
• Entity display configuration of "Thumbnail Only" view mode for digital_object, which uses the "Strawberry Field Formatter for Custom Metadata Templates" formatter. The formatter settings specify the "Thumbnail Only" metadatadisplay template.
• A new solr view with Views Embed display, of digital objects with a contextual filter for the "parent_id" solr field - filtered by objects with as_image_exif_mimetypes that we know IIIF can generate thumbnails for, sorted by the sequence id, and using the "Thumbnail Only" rendered entity view mode previously described.
• Altered the "Multiple Thumbnails via IIIF and FontAwesome" metadatadisplay template to pull in this view like this:

You could use {% if data.type == 'CreativeWorkSeries' %} if you wanted to limit this by collection type.

Sounds cool. We did something similar but without the Views Embed display (would love to hear more about that/need how that works). Wonder if you could also share more details on the theming channel on slack? Pretty sure people would appreciate your contribution/experience doing this

Side note: I think we should work on Metadata Display Cache tags more. E.g when a views used via a twig extension is used in a twig template the view does not trigger a cache refresh. You will eventually have that need (we have it already)
