Installing hlint failed on the package: haskell-src-exts-0.4.8. It complained about missing happy. I installed happy using cabal install, and then cabal install hlint worked fine.

luntain@plato ~ $ cabal --version
cabal-install version 0.6.0
using version 1.6.0.1 of the Cabal library
