Best practice of forking and developing locally

I am new to Hugo and I was wondering what would be a reasonable way to fork the theme repository, modify the code and preview the site locally. My goal is to apply some customization and also be able to keep up with future upstream updates.

Do I need to change the repo to my forked repo and if so, is it sufficient?

# add Hextra theme
hugo mod get github.com/imfing/hextra

and
