The catch-all is just too easy to be caught by!
I am pretty happy-go-lucky with my recursive footnotes and I think 5 is probably enough. We could likely rewrite the parsing to be non-recursive if this became a problem (for this or other reasons); see how emphasis parsing collects the inlines between delimiters and reparents them.
