Magento 2.2.2 product price indexer not updating even though cron runs successfully

Magento 2.2.2 product price indexer not updating catalog product flat table, even though cron runs successfully.

This also happens to stock indexer time to time.

found a similar issue here but still the same
#5836

Preconditions
Magento 2.2.2 CE
Debian 8
PHP 7.1
MySQL 5.6
Using flat categories and products
set to update on schedule

Steps to reproduce

1. Make a price/ special price or stock qty update on a associated simple product or just simple product ( directly or through an api )
2. Save changes
3. wait for the cron to run ( runs successfully with status ready on all)

Expected result

1. Should see the new price on frontend
2. See product on frontend (PLP) if it was out of stock prior to qty update.

Actual result

1. Still seeing old prices prior to updating them
2. Product still not showing on PLP but shows out of stock through direct link

For the time being we have sorted this by running price indexer explicitly through cron.

Still awaiting @magento-engcom-team to acknowledge this bug.
