Hi everyone,

I'm a verified student using the GitHub Copilot Student plan and I'm looking for clarification regarding AI credit usage.

Today (June 1, 2026), my monthly credits were reset. After using Copilot Agent Mode for a few around 10 to 20 requests, I noticed that my entire monthly allowance had already been exhausted.

Usage Summary:-

1. AI Credits Used: 200 / 200
2. Included Usage Consumed: $2.00 / $2.00
3. Additional Usage: Disabled
4. Credits Reset Date: July 1, 2026

Model Usage Breakdown

1. GPT-5.4 mini: 145.01 credits
2. GPT-5 mini: 35.98 credits
3. Claude Haiku 4.5: 18.93 credits

What Seems Unusual:-

The usage dashboard shows the full $2.00 (200 credits) being consumed on June 1, which is the first day of the new billing cycle. I only used Agent Mode for around 10 requests before receiving the "out of credits" message.

In previous months, I used Agent Mode much more extensively and did not exhaust my credits this quickly.

I also recently received GitHub's email regarding changes to the Copilot Student plan, available models, and usage limits, so I'm wondering whether this behavior is expected under the new system.

Questions

1. Is it normal for around 10 Agent Mode requests to consume the entire 200-credit monthly allowance?
2. Have other students experienced significantly higher credit consumption recently?
3. Were there any recent changes to how Agent Mode usage is calculated?
4. Is there a way to view a detailed per-request credit breakdown?
5. Could the dashboard be displaying usage incorrectly?

I used the agent mode last month very frequently but the limit never got exhausted, but this month just after the limit got reset it got over within a few prompts

@maheerCodes I appreciate the explanation, but I want to respectfully push back on some of these points.

I was NOT using Agent Mode. I was using standard Copilot Chat in VS Code with the Auto model selected. These were simple, straightforward coding questions — not complex multi-step agent tasks, not large repository analysis, not file processing. Just normal chat interactions like any student would use for help with their code.

So the Agent Mode justification does not apply to my case.

The real issue being avoided here:
The core problem is not whether the credit accounting is technically correct. The real problem is:

1. Before June 1, 2026, I regularly made 20–25+ requests per day with zero issues for months.
2. On June 1, 2026 — the exact day GitHub switched to credit-based billing — 4–5 simple chat messages wiped out my entire monthly allowance.
3. This is not a coincidence. This is a direct result of GitHub changing the billing system overnight.

What nobody is addressing:
200 AI credits ($2.00) per month is simply not enough for a verified student doing real development work — regardless of how Agent Mode works internally. The Copilot Student plan was marketed as a meaningful free tool for students. Under this new system, it is effectively non-functional after a handful of chats on day one.

My ask remains the same:
GitHub needs to either increase the Student plan credit allowance significantly, or provide a lightweight model option that doesn't drain the budget in minutes. A $2.00/month equivalent budget for students is not acceptable, especially when this was changed without clear prior warning.

I'm not alone in this — multiple students are reporting the same experience today. This needs a real answer from GitHub staff, not just technical explanations for why the system behaves this way.

I'm a verified student on the GitHub Copilot Student plan and I want to share my experience because I think many others are facing the same issue.

Before June 1, 2026, I was regularly using Copilot Agent Mode in VS Code for my projects — sometimes doing large automation tasks, running agents, working with JSON files, and monitoring terminal output. I did this consistently for months without ever hitting any limit. The system worked great for my student workload.

Then on June 3, 2026 — just 2-3 days into the new billing cycle — I noticed that 180 out of my 200 monthly AI credits were already consumed. I hadn't done anything differently. Same workflow, same tasks, same Agent Mode I had always used.

The usage dashboard showed most of the consumption came from Claude Haiku 4.5 and GPT-5 mini — models I was already using before without any issue.

This is deeply frustrating because:

• I didn't change my usage habits at all
• The old system handled my workload perfectly fine for months
• The new credit system consumed nearly my entire monthly allowance in just 2-3 days
• As a student, I cannot afford to upgrade to a paid plan

I understand GitHub needs a sustainable business model, but the transition to token-based billing has made the Student plan practically unusable for anyone doing real development work with Agent Mode.

My questions for the GitHub team:

1. Will the Student plan credit limit be reviewed given this feedback from the community?
2. Is there any plan to offer more credits to verified students?
3. Why were students not given a proper warning about how drastically this would affect usage?

I'm not alone in this — many students are reporting the same issue. I hope GitHub takes this seriously and reconsiders the credit allocation for Student plan users.

I am Copilot Agentic Heavy User, and surprisingly with too much use, I barely cant cross 50% in previous Month quota as due to Session and Weekly Limits, and just as it reset today, on 1 single run it took 80.6 credits and in next 2 run, its over in that single chat!

So maybe the Credit System is not correctly rolled out or AI is excessively using too much credits ( but it use to do same task previously without any issue )

Kindly look into this Issue as it will become merely Copilot Student Plan without any actual outcome, if only for 15min work whole monthly credits will be used up !

You should probably report this as a billing or usage-tracking bug too.

Your dashboard says you’ve used 200 / 200 AI credits, but when you look at the model breakdown, it only adds up to:

Auto: GPT-5.3-Codex: 34.47 credits
Auto: GPT-5 mini: 13.42 credits
Auto: Claude Haiku 4.5: 2.91 credits

That’s only 50.80 credits total, which means 149.20 credits are missing/unaccounted for.

Happened with me as well. Doesn't make much sense to have that limited number of credits. Hopefully is a bug they're gonna fix, if intended, well, thanks for the ride.

I'm more so curious as to why we don't get the pro plan limits, even though that's what we used to get. I don't see anything saying we shouldn't, so why don't we get the 10 dollars of usage?

I dont understand my Student Plan anymore, it Shows Git Hub Pro but Copilot Free, so at the moment my Copilot Pro is also gone ? When I want to activate again it shows thats its not possible at the moment... So bad at this moment because I ride my thesis and need some change in my Plot codes wich is anoying to do myself... With a few changes my Free Plan is emty....

Yeah, now it’s increasing to $1.99. There’s a big difference between when I first registered as a student in January and in June.

Verified student. Yesterday (May 31) everything worked fine. Today, June 1, after the credit reset – within less than 10 simple chat requests, my entire 200 credits were gone.

I'm going to be honest: I'm really angry.

Not because I expect something for nothing, but because GitHub changed the Student plan overnight – drastically for the worse – without clear warning and without giving us any choice. What used to easily last a full month is now exhausted after 15 minutes of development on the very first day of the month.

That's not "student support" anymore. That's a demo.

Either the credit calculation is broken (then fix it immediately), or GitHub has intentionally made the Student plan useless. Both are unacceptable.

My clear demand:

Immediately investigate the credit metering

Significantly increase the monthly allowance for students (at least to the level of the old request-based system)

Same issue as everyone else. In a single day, burned through most of my AI Credits. As an additional note, 200 AI Credits are the same as what the Free tier has, meaning the only benefit you now get from the Student package is the unlimited inline completions.

This is a disgusting turn from GitHub saying "Students are our future". Burned through all my limit in 1 prompt, making a 25 line edit to python code.

We don't have time to deal with this kind of troublemaker behavior, whether it's a not cautious, gradual rollout strategy, a business strategy to attract subscribers with low pricing and then suddenly impose unreasonable increases, or simply greed with little regard for how subscribers feel.

Raising prices isn't the problem. Companies do that all the time. The problem is the way it was done. This rollout feels abrupt and heavy-handed.

If GitHub doesn't address the issue today, just unsubscribe from Copilot and switch directly to Claude or Codex.

So that means GitHub only gives students $2 worth of AI credits per month.

i got more usage when i wasn't even in the student developer program.
seems i can't even pay for pro because it's been discontinued that's why they recommend pro plus.

Most of us understand that AI compute is expensive and that this level of generosity (especially while Opus was still available to students) wasn't financially sustainable but it's not possible to overstate how hard Microsoft is dropping the ball under @satyanadella when it comes to AI/Copilot.

Going from barely exceeding 40% of the quota to running out after 5 queries isn't an adjustment to the student tier; it's a lack of direction. For those of us who want to give GitHub Copilot our money; their signup system has been temporarily paused for like a month now! It's like they're begging the next generation of engineers to get familiar building with tools outside the Microsoft ecosystem.

Me too. Verified student. I did one simple thing and ran out of credits. Before, I always used a cheap model like Haiku 4.5 or Codex 5.2 in low, sometimes in medium, and I could use it almost every day of the month. Now I got my reset, it's literally day one and already finished... for the ENTIRE MONTH! I'm going to move out... even with free OpenCode I was able to work for two complete weeks... that's so sad, Copilot... GitHub Student Plan for AI is worth nothing right now...

It is not just Student plan, It is about all plans. For example Pro plan is 5 times greater than Student. So, with student plan you made about 20 requests, and with Pro about 100 requests. However, paying 10 $ for 100 requests is still expensive. Maybe if someone makes heavy requests, then less than 100 become available.Concluding, Microsoft completely changed their orientation to a massive-profit first one, and I am not sure at which aspect they bet on. Do they bet on the fact that many of us will upgrade their plan? Do they bet in the fact that the heavy-users/vibe coders will be discouraged, so they drastically reduce the damage(damage control) ? Next months will be very crucial, as even Microsoft does not have any idea how the market/developer community will react
