max width uses spacing variables instead of container

just ran into the issue described in this discussion thread: #17777

it seems that when I define custom spacing variables in my theme, these get used with max width instead of the container ones, which is not in accordance with the docs

Hey! Been doing some more digging to figure out why the resolution order is the way it is now. You can read about it here: #15180 but it seems like no matter which order we define, it's always going to be confusing for some folks. Sorry!

That said I agree that the docs could be clearer here. Let us think about this some more.
