bendol/README.md

Hi there, I'm Ben Dol 👋

I'm a senior software engineer with over a decade of experience building and maintaining open-source tools, mostly in the gaming and modding space. I enjoy blending technical rigor with creative problem-solving, whether that means architecting a custom game server, building mod systems for my favorite games or scripting bots in Python and Lua. When I'm not coding, you can find me writing about U.S. politics and policy on my Substack, and of course

What I'm up to these days

Wrenspace · TypeScript, Electron, React
This is my main project right now. It's a desktop app for running a bunch of AI coding agents side by side (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent, OpenCode and others) so you don't end up buried in terminal tabs. Your sessions come back after a restart, agents can pass work to each other, and there's a plugin system for all the extra stuff I kept wanting. Grab a build if you want to try it.

Fantasy Mounts · Java, Minecraft
A Minecraft mod full of fantasy creatures you can find, tame, breed and ride. It runs on Forge, NeoForge, Fabric and Quilt, which means four times the players and four times the bugs. If you hit one, report it here.

An idle game I can't show yet · C#, Godot
A multiplayer idle game with its own backend. More on this once there's something worth looking at.

Smaller projects

  • Modern Chat: a RuneLite plugin that gives Old School RuneScape a chat box that feels like it's from this century.[^1]
  • HyDowned: a Hytale mod where you go down instead of dying, so your friends get a chance to revive you.
  • SlayerLegendWiki: a community wiki for Slayer Legend. It runs on my own wiki framework, which uses GitHub as the backend and runs on serverless hosting.
  • Parking Zones: crowdsourced parking data for an app I'm building. People submit it as issues, and GitHub Actions checks each one and turns it into a PR.
  • Claude Voice Input: a Claude Code plugin that lets you talk to it with a hotkey instead of typing.
Older projects I've moved on from (still up if you're curious)
  • DaggerEngine: the Unreal Engine 5 framework I built to learn UE5. See DaggerEngine, the Dagger sample game and a skeleton template.
  • RisingV: a modular modding framework for V Rising, built around server-side BepInEx plugins. See the org and the docs.
  • PyBot: a Python scripting engine with a task dispatcher, swappable components and configurable input.
  • ElvUI for WotLK: my ElvUI fork targeting 3.3.5a, for anyone still raiding on Wrath servers.
  • GitLab pipeline examples: CI/CD setups for Python, Node and Docker, plus an IntelliJ plugin for managing pipelines without leaving the IDE.

What I work with

Tech I use

  • Most days: TypeScript, Java, C# and Python, plus more Rust every month.
  • Games: Minecraft modding (Forge, NeoForge, Fabric), Godot, Unreal Engine 5, Unity, RuneLite plugins, and BepInEx/Harmony when a Unity game needs prying open.
  • Infra: GitHub Actions does most of my chores. I bring in Docker, Kubernetes, AWS or GCP when a project needs real servers.
  • Lately: a lot of time building with AI coding agents, and building tools for them, and figuring out where they actually earn their keep.
  • Where I started: Java, Spring and GWT on the job, and years of C++ and Lua in the OpenTibia scene on nights and weekends.

Communities I've been part of

  • Wrenspace (founder): building the app and the community around it.
  • RisingV (founder): the V Rising modding framework and docs.
  • OpenTibia: I contributed to OTClient, The Forgotten Server and other projects. A lot of what I know about game servers came from here.
  • GWT Material Design: I put a lot of work into its early days and still help out now and then.
  • GitHub Arctic Code Vault contributor: some of my code is sitting in a vault in Svalbard, which I still think is pretty cool.

Say hi

  • Email: it's on my GitHub profile.
  • Writing: bendol.me, where I post about politics and policy "weekly". The quote marks are doing a lot of work there.
  • Issues and PRs: open one on anything here. I do read them.
