Renderman 27.1 GPU Crash on 4090

Version: Gaffer 1.6.9.1-windows
Third-party tools: Renderman 27.1
Third-party modules: stock gaffer + 4090

Description

Trying to render with XPU crashes the app with "acces violation" (thats all i could catch up from the terminal)
Same happens in 1.6.8.

Steps to reproduce

Try to switch to XPU render, gaffer crashes. CPU renders fine.
The nvidia drivers are 591.

We've had a similar report on our Discord channel, but another user was able to render the same repro scene on their Windows setup without problems. So I suspect there is some configuration-specific problem we haven't been able to pinpoint yet. Are you able to provide a simple .gfr file we can test with?

Here are the files i can provide:
this is how I crashed it before packed it to the zip.

• run bat file
• run cpu renderman, box renders
• switch to xpu - insta crash

I tried rendering your cube in the script on my Windows machine and it seems to work fine on both RIS and XPU.

Are yo successfully rendering on XPU with any other DCC?

Have you tried running your run_gaffer_bat.bat script without setting OCIO, so Gaffer's default OCIO is used? I'm not sure if that's relevant, but it should be a quick thing to try to make it in line with vanilla Gaffer.

It would be useful to see if RenderMan is able to render with XPU independent of Gaffer. There's a test script that ships with RenderMan you can try out. It's in RMANTREE/etc/setup/make.bat. You'll need to have RMANTREE in a directory you have write access to (to compile the shader and write out the image). I expect you'll need to change the prman line to prman -variant xpu trialxpu.rib to test XPU. I haven't been able to test that because I don't have a commercial license that prman seems to need.

On the Discord thread John mentioned, Alex posted this link which may be relevant : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5708599/windows-11-pro-security-update-kb5074109-messed-up. Seems some people are having GPU problems after the last couple of Windows updates which seem to be causing lots of other problems too.

It doesn't look like I have that installed, so it may be that's why it works for me.

Oh, a couple other things with that RenderMan test script.

1. You'll need RMANTREE/bin in your PATH environment variable.
2. You might also try prman -variant xpugpu trialxpu.rib and prman -variant xpugpu trialxpu.rib to see how it does with CPU, GPU and mixed XPU modes.
