windows binaries

Upstream provides windows binaries but seemingly only 32-bit. @tkelman, do you think we could get this into opensuse? Relatively high priority since I'd like to use this package in a tutorial in 4 weeks.

Yes I would definitely try to go the winrpm route here, graphviz is fairly well-known. Doesn't look like it's available yet, I'd have to give cross-compiling a try and see whether packaging would be straightforward.

Hm, graphviz is a bit bigger than I thought it was, here's the opensuse linux spec file - https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/graphics/graphviz/graphviz.spec?expand=1

There's quite a bit going on there. Is there some minimal configuration of graphviz you could get away with for the purposes of this package? Specifically, do you know whether perl is always required at runtime? I don't see a mingw perl in opensuse yet.

Maybe @Keno can comment, but all that's needed by this package is cgraph.dll and gvc.dll. I would guess that perl isn't needed for this, but we'd have to experiment.

I got partway through it on Friday (see https://github.com/tkelman/graphviz/compare/patch-1), but I don't have a very good sense of how far through the build I got working, how much is left, or how hard the remaining pieces will be until I spend some time on it again (which probably won't be until after 0.3.4 is done). You can try picking up where I left off if you have the MinGW cross-compilers on your system (you mainly use Ubuntu 14.04, right?), or maybe look into a non-graphviz backup plan. Even if we can get dll's compiled that's no guarantee that they will work properly.

Let's see if I can build the 64-bit version in visual studio. I wouldn't mind posting the dlls if that's the easiest route.

I've been playing around with upstream's win32 binaries. I'm getting crashes inside render at the call to gvRenderContext. Inside that call I noticed that julia_io_initialize runs as a callback, but I haven't been able to trace the crash past that. Julia just dies without any output, no stack trace or anything. Haven't found any obvious 32/64-bit type mismatches, though there is quite a bit of hairy pointer manipulation going on.

Another slightly worrying issue is that using GraphViz fails with:

@mlubin are you still hoping to get this to work or do you have a backup plan? I'm making some progress, but don't know yet if I'll get all the way to the dll's you want. Do you have some example code for testing if I do? No package tests here...

I basically have a backup plan to tell Windows users to use JuliaBox if they want to run the parts of the tutorial that need GraphViz. So this isn't a terribly high priority and may not be the best use of your time. But if you feel the need to fix windows build issues (aka gardening) then it would be appreciated. The tutorial is next Monday btw.
The best test I have is to copy and paste the examples from the readme and see if they display correctly inline in IJulia.

I'm distracting myself while at a retreat for the next few days, the other thing I'd be working on is a MathProgBase expression-tree OSiL writer. If you were on IRC right now I'd be bugging you about that, trying to figure out constr_expr doing strange things from JuMP.

Monday would be pretty tight for getting things all proper into the upstream openSUSE repo, if I can even get it working all the way.

Greedily an OSiL writer would help out JuMP more than windows binaries for GraphViz, but either way you'd be helping someone :)
Better to open a JuMP issue about constr_expr, I'm also traveling right now.

New user attempting to use Julia for an algorithms class... just seeing if this issue is likely what is keeping me from being able to Pkg.add GraphViz on my windows machine. Trying to create a graph for a class project using Graphs.jl, but not having much luck plotting.

@swgregg, yes, GraphViz.jl won't work at all on Windows.
