TimeTurner 1.8
Install
Download TimeTurner.dmg, open it, and drag TimeTurner to Applications.
Or with Homebrew:
brew trust apeabody007/tap
brew install --cask apeabody007/tap/timeturner
The cask installs that same notarized dmg, so nothing is compiled on your
machine. Homebrew 6 will not load a cask from a tap you have not trusted, which
is what the first line is for.
Signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens without any Gatekeeper warnings. Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon.
New since v1.7
- Golden Sand, a menu toggle that tints the grains the warm amber of the app icon. Walls, countdown and everything else stay as they are. Built with GitHub Copilot CLI from a single prompt.
TimeTurner 1.7

New since v1.6
- The hover panel counts a break down as "back to work" rather than "to the work", which is what mirroring "to the break" had produced. It only ever showed during a break slot, which is how it got out the door.

New since v1.5
- Hover the menu bar glass for the whole hour. Sixty characters, one a minute, in the vocabulary the glass already uses:
*spent, owhere you are now,.still to come,~the break waiting for you. Tick marks sit over the exact minute they name, at the grid boundaries in Pomodoro Mode and at the quarters without it, and a line underneath says which slot you are in and how long is left of it. - The menu still opens on a click, and the panel gets out of its way while it is up.
TimeTurner 1.5
No more blinking, and the glass turns over properly.
The window used to flicker: Core Animation cross fades a layer's contents by default, so every repaint dissolved the old glass into the new one and the background read brighter mid-dissolve. The view now owns a layer that refuses implicit animations. Measured against the running window, the background now holds a single value across every captured frame.
The pile also settles now. A grain could squeeze diagonally between two packed neighbours, so a finished pile repacked itself one grain a tick, forever; a grain only rolls into a column it could actually reach. Idle repaints dropped from about eleven a second to one.
And at the hour the glass now turns over as one piece instead of snapping. The bottom pile arrives in the top chamber as a cone balanced on its point, and collapses, which is what real sand does when you set a flipped hourglass down.
Install
Download TimeTurner.dmg, open it, and drag TimeTurner to Applications.
Or with Homebrew:

TimeTurner 1.4
Fixes the background blinking between frames.
The glass view was neither opaque nor layer backed while redrawing many times a second, so macOS cleared to the window's grey background before each draw and that clear was sometimes visible as a flash. The view is now opaque and double buffered, and the window background matches the glass so a live resize cannot flash either.
Signed and notarized. Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon.
TimeTurner 1.3
The glass now turns over properly.
At the hour the window used to snap: the bottom pile vanished and a full top chamber appeared in its place. Now the whole glass rotates as one piece, frozen, the way a real one does in your hand. On landing, the bottom pile arrives in the top chamber as a cone balanced on its point, and the simulation collapses and levels it, which is what real sand does the moment you set a flipped hourglass down.
Signed and notarized. Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon.
TimeTurner 1.2
Cmd+Q quits and Cmd+W closes the window when the glass is focused, and the menu is grouped with dividers: the countdown, the window, the modes, Launch at Login, Quit. Signed and notarized. Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon.
TimeTurner 1.1
Adds Pin to Front: a menu toggle that floats the glass above every other window while you work. Signed and notarized. Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon.
TimeTurner 1.0
A menu bar hourglass for the Mac. The sand drains over the current clock hour, and at the top of every hour the glass turns itself over.
- A tiny menu bar glass that drains across the hour and does a smooth 180 degree turn at :00
- A resizable window holding an hourglass built entirely out of keyboard characters, running a real falling-sand simulation gated to the clock
- Pomodoro Mode: the classic 25/5 grid anchored to the clock, with no start button; you join the slot already in progress
- Brown Noise: a live-generated masking rumble that runs full during work sand and drops to a whisper during breaks
- Launch at Login, a countdown in thin digits, and sand that physically sloshes when you resize the glass
Signed and notarized by Apple. Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon. Download the dmg, open it, drag TimeTurner to Applications.
