Entry field: show items in rows instead of one column

Linked items of an entry field are displayed below each other. They are draggable to change the order. When many entries are selected/linked, the list becomes very long.

It would save a lot of space if linked entries could be shown in rows instead of one column.

I’ve tried this with Backend CSS (using doublesecretagency/craft-cpcss) but entries lose their abilit to be sorted.
