custom environment variable not working on MacOS

I strictly followed the steps in the document to show a temporary environment variable in my app:
REACT_APP_SECRET_CODE=abcdef npm start

However, the value of REACT_APP_SECRET_CODE does not come .

How are you attempting to use the value. It should appear in your code as process.env. REACT_APP_SECRET_CODE. Please be careful though, you shouldn't be putting secret codes in your react app environment. These will be visible to anyone who loads the app because they are compiled into the client of your application, not your server.

You are reading instructions on master. The section you were reading has a note:

Note: this feature is available with react-scripts@0.3.0 and higher.

This is not the version you are using because 0.3.0 is not released yet. Please wait for it to be released (I'd say a week or two) and then you can use this feature.
