Profiles lack navigation to their trace, spans, and logs #127220

Open

Description

@sentry-junior

There's no clear way to get from a profile in Explore → Profiles to the trace, spans, and logs that were recorded around it. Users trying to correlate a UI profile with what their app was doing at the time get stuck on the profile page.

Current behavior

  • Opening profiles from Explore → Profiles shows no Transaction, "Go to Transaction", or Logs entry point.
  • The flamegraph minimap no longer shows the transaction and its spans.
  • Filtering by transaction is confusing. In one case, a profile appeared linked to a single transaction and showed only one system frame from the Sentry browser SDK (@sentry/browser/build/npm/esm/prod/helpers.js).
  • Current workaround: copy the profiler.id from the profile, search profiler.id:<id> in Explore → Traces, then open the trace to find its spans and logs.

Context

  • Seen with @sentry/react 10.25.0, UI profiling with profileLifecycle: 'manual'. The profiler starts on demand after Sentry.init via uiProfiler.startProfiler().
  • A related bug where the span details panel didn't show the linked profile was fixed in fix(profile): Show profile in trace detail without transaction object #125206.
  • More generally, the profile → trace → logs workflow is hard to follow and could use a rethink, not just a missing link.
