PV surplus via MQTT

I am running HA version 2025.8.2 and charger firmware 59.4. As the HTTP API was too unreliable, I was hoping to switch to MQTT. But for the life of me, I cannot get surplus charging via MQTT. I just seem to be unable to set pgrid (or whatever equivalent there is for MQTT). If I listen to pgrid, I get "null". If I try to set it via pgrid/set, then pgrid/result comes back with api key has no setter. When using the http api, pgrid is mandatory to get surplus charging started. how do i do this via mqtt?
