This is a manual backport of #36458 since the automated backporting has failed - probably because the branch in the forked repo has since been deleted.

probably because the branch in the forked repo has since been deleted.

Did the author delete the branch? I would have expected that all merges automatically delete the PR branch. But if that is true, wouldn't we get this error every time?

As I was recently informed, our policy is actually to not backport backend related changes aside from exceptional circumstances, such as vulnerability mitigation. I don't believe this change can be classified as exceptional circumstances. As a result, it will be part of v1.12 series.

As a result I am closing this PR.
