Prepare a release for #1000.
The release branch is awkward because I kind of messed up with the pre-release branch being the same as the stable release branch (master).
So, this branch is the current master branch with the commits from the pre-release removed. Awkward and error-prone, I should have moved the pre-release to its own branch and maintained it from there.
