^H does not work on pattern input

In iTerm, my backspace key sends the escape sequence ^H but this sequence does not appear to be accepted on the pattern input. The cursor is advanced one position back without deleting what had been written.

If I remove the ^H iTerm re-mapping, deletion works as expected. I think both variants should be accepted.
