separate messages from channels to it's own tab, with a more imageboard style interface

Mixing it with the standard inbox is just asking for information overload.

Also having to click on each message to display it's content is very Usenet esque. Which is to say, very annoying to use.

I would hope than browsing a channel be more like reddit, 4chan, facebook... as in multithreaded conversation, which can be scrolled though.

This would require a bit of an overhaul of the basic bitmessage packet as well, to include "previous message id" field, and perhaps a voting mechanism for community self moderation.

This fork actually has chans in another tab.

Threading is already planned in another issue, but I postponed it to v0.8.

And navigation could be improved too.
