Teacher Re-Applying for GitHub Education. Deemed a student even though document says 'staff member' on it. #184246

Hi everyone,Can anyone please tell me what I should do in this case? After being having Faculty/Teacher status for all of 2025 and reapplying for teacher/faculty member status again a few days ago, I was accepted, but provided with Student status. Can this please be rectified somehow? The Apply/Re-Apply button is greyed-out on the application page and GitHub doesn't deal with these cases individually any more. Feeling just a little helpless here. I'm happy to provide information again, but I won't provide it here, for clear privacy reasons. Thank you so much for any help from anyone, |

This is a known issue with GitHub’s automated Education verification system, which no longer handles most faculty/student cases manually. If you were previously verified as faculty and are now shown as a student, it usually means the system matched your details (email or records) to a student entry in the institution database. Since the Apply/Re-Apply button is greyed out, there is no immediate way to resubmit or correct the information. GitHub typically requires waiting until the current status expires before allowing a new application. When reapplying in the future, using a faculty-specific email address and documentation (faculty ID or employment letter) can help avoid misclassification. You may try opening a general GitHub Support ticket (not Education-specific) explaining that your faculty status was downgraded after re-verification, though resolution is not guaranteed. Unfortunately, at the moment there is no reliable manual override, and waiting or reapplying later is usually the only option. |

Do NOT re-apply again . Reply to the existing GitHub Education ticket Use the same ticket with the (#) and clearly state you are faculty/staff, not a student, or just submit a clearly distinguishable faculty document Community-verified documents that work best |

Well this is a known limitation of GitHub’s automated Education verification system, which no longer handles most faculty or student verification cases manually. If you were previously verified as faculty and are now being shown as a student, it usually means the system matched your email address or submitted details to a student record within your institution’s database during the latest verification attempt. Since the Apply / Re-Apply button is currently greyed out, there is unfortunately no immediate way to resubmit documents or correct the classification at this time. In most cases, GitHub requires users to wait until the current status expires before allowing a new application. When you are able to reapply in the future, using a faculty-specific institutional email address along with clear documentation (such as a faculty ID card or official employment letter) can help reduce the chances of misclassification. You may also try opening a general GitHub Support ticket (not Education-specific) explaining that your faculty status was downgraded after re-verification. However, it’s worth noting that resolutions through this route are not guaranteed, as GitHub has largely moved away from manual reviews for Education status. Unfortunately, at the moment there is no reliable manual override, and waiting for the next eligibility window or reapplying later is typically the only available option. I hope this helps..... |

Hi Julius, You’re definitely not alone—this situation has come up for several educators recently, and while it’s frustrating, there is a clear explanation for what’s happening. Why this likely happenedGitHub Education’s verification system is now largely automated. When you reapplied, the system probably detected your proof as valid for education but did not confidently classify it as faculty, so it defaulted to Student status instead of rejecting the application outright. This is not uncommon and does not indicate misuse or an error on your part. Why the Apply/Re-Apply button is greyed outOnce an application is approved (even under the wrong category), GitHub temporarily locks reapplication to prevent repeated submissions. Unfortunately, this also means you can’t immediately correct the status yourself. Important limitation (current GitHub policy)GitHub Education no longer handles individual manual corrections for faculty/student misclassification through standard support tickets. This is why you’re not seeing a clear “fix” button or a direct contact option. What you can do (realistic options)
ReassuranceYou didn’t do anything wrong, and your previous faculty status for 2025 supports that. This is almost certainly an automation edge case, not a permanent downgrade. Once reapplication is available again, most users are able to restore faculty status successfully. Thanks for raising this—it helps others facing the same issue as well. Best regards, |

From what I’ve seen, when you do reapply, the system pretty much treats it as if it was a brand new verification (generates new documents, etc.), at least for my clients. It doesn't "remember" that you had Faculty before — it just looks at whatever info there is now. If anything in the auto-check suggested “student” (email structure, type of document, something in institution data etc) it can get set to Student even if that is not correct. And yes, if your status is currently active (even if in Student) that’s why the reapply button is greyed out |

Hi Julius, It sounds like your Faculty status may not have been fully re-verified during the reapplication process, which can sometimes cause the account to default to Student status. Here are a few steps that might help resolve this: Make sure you applied using your official institutional (faculty) email address. Check the approval email from GitHub Education carefully — sometimes it mentions what documentation was accepted. Submit a request through the GitHub Education support form under “Account / Verification Issue.” Even though they don’t handle cases as individually as before, you can still request a manual status review. If possible, be ready to provide: Proof of employment (faculty ID, contract, etc.) A link to your official faculty profile page on your institution’s website If the “Re-Apply” button is greyed out, it usually means your application is currently locked, so contacting support is likely the best option. These types of verification mismatches do get corrected after review, so hopefully this can be sorted out soon. Hope this helps! |

I had a similar issue when re-applying for GitHub Education as a teacher. Even though my document clearly stated "staff member," the system still flagged me as a student. The way I resolved it was by submitting a support request through GitHub Education Help: https://support.github.com/contact/education. In my ticket, I explained the situation and attached the same document, but I highlighted the section that confirmed my staff status. The support team manually reviewed it and updated my account to teacher status. If you are experiencing this, I recommend contacting support directly and making sure your document clearly shows your role. Pointing out the exact wording in your submission helps speed up the process. |

Since you already had faculty status for the entire year, that sounds incredibly annoying. • You were formerly a faculty member or teacher. Mention that you're happy to provide verification in private if necessary, and include your GitHub username. |

Subject: Correction Required: Verified as Student instead of Faculty (Previous 2025 Faculty Status) Message: Hi GitHub Education Support, I am writing to request a manual correction of my account status. I have been a verified Faculty/Teacher for the duration of 2025. Upon my recent re-application, the automated system approved my request but incorrectly classified me as a Student. Issue Summary: Previous Status: Verified Faculty (2025) Current Status: Incorrectly assigned "Student" status Problem: The "Apply/Re-apply" button is now greyed out, preventing me from correcting the documentation myself. My submitted documentation explicitly states "Staff Member," but it appears the automated system defaulted to Student status. I have the following official documents ready to provide privately to confirm my current employment: Official Faculty/Staff ID card. Employment verification letter for the 2026 academic year. A link to my official faculty profile on my institution's website. Could you please reset my application status or manually update my role to Faculty so I can continue using GitHub Global Campus features for my classes? Thank you for your assistance. Best regards, Umang Kumar |
