   I imagine the goal would be not to get rid of this altogether but to reduce it to a few doorbell APIs that cause Nexus to go fetch information using a server-side-versioned API? There are various places where events happen outside Nexus that it needs to know about and I agree it should be driven by background tasks / polling but I think it's probably also valuable to ping Nexus to trigger such a poll.
