Investigate how to handle WSL2 enhancement available in the 'insiders'/store release; systemd support #15967
This means there could be two version available; the in-Windows delievered WSL binary or one provided by in-store. This might lead to inconsistencies in the deployment or conflicts when someone enables systemd support for the podman machine distro. We might have to do feature detection and enable this accordingly.
Since Windows 11 has a limited device install footprint (due to the TPM requirements), I think we should hold off on this, at least until it winds up in Windows 10
We have to decide to support older versions of WSL and keep using the nested namespace, and only support systend, or go for a detection (which eventually can be dropped) to run either setup when possible.

@gbraad @n1hility any movement on this?

It looks like a Microsoft has this still in Preview. I think we are in a holding pattern before this is widely available.

It seems this now generally available, and interestingly also for Windows 10.

@n1hility @gbraad what should we do with this issue?

We have to come up with a strategy on how to handle this. I have been using the systemd support and so far has been flawless

For what it's worth, this systemd mode is used by default for recent ubuntus https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/systemd , it's probably now mature enough to be used in podman-machine.
Use WSL systemd support
