Context / Intent

Dependency updates here run on Dependabot with no grouping, no rebasing and no auto-merge. The result is 7 open PRs, several months old, and 57 closed unmerged over time — the bot was never missing, the merge path was. This moves version updates to Renovate and leaves Dependabot handling security only.

Approach

.github/renovate.json extends the Sanity ecosystem presets and then local>robotostudio/.github last, which is the part that matters: Renovate resolves presets in order and later packageRules override earlier ones, so a preset placed last is the final word. Listed first, the org policy would be silently overwritten by the vendor presets it sits under. ignorePresets drops sanity-io's own :schedule and :lock-file-maintenance, which would otherwise replace the weekly cadence with monthly dev dependencies and a yearly lockfile refresh.

Deleting .github/dependabot.yml stops version updates only. Dependabot alerts and security updates are repository settings and are unaffected, so advisories keep arriving immediately and off-schedule — the policy disables Renovate's own vulnerability alerts so the two bots don't both file for the same CVE.

The CI actions move from v4 to v5 so the workflow matches turbo-start-bigcommerce. No inputs changed between those majors.

Verification

  • pnpm lint
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm check-types
  • pnpm test
  • pnpm build
  • After merge: require the Lint, Format, Type Check & Tests check on main, then confirm Dependabot alerts and security updates are still enabled in Settings → Code security

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The repository removes daily Dependabot updates, adds Renovate presets, upgrades GitHub Actions to v5, disables checkout credential persistence, and adds a Studio build step to CI.

Changes

Dependency automation and CI maintenance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Renovate configuration
.github/renovate.json, .github/dependabot.yml
Adds Sanity Renovate presets and excludes Sanity scheduling and lock-file-maintenance presets. Removes the daily root npm Dependabot configuration.
Workflow action upgrades
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/deploy-sanity.yml, .github/workflows/e2e.yml, .github/workflows/sanity-template.yml
Upgrades GitHub Actions to v5, pins the pnpm setup action where applicable, and disables checkout credential persistence where applicable.
Studio build validation
.github/workflows/ci.yml
Copies .env.example to .env and runs the filtered Turbo build for Studio.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c65bf

The CI workflow changes retain mutable action tags and checkout credentials for a later validation step, creating bounded supply-chain and credential-exposure risk. The PR is otherwise mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up to pin actions and disable credential persistence where appropriate.

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding objectives in [ROB-2731]: Dependabot configuration is removed, Renovate configuration is added with the required preset exclusions, and GitHub Actions are upgraded to v5. The parent issue [ROB-2719] adds context but no unmet coding requirement is evident. Repository settings, stale PR closure, branch protection, and auto-merge verification are non-coding acceptance criteria and are not assessed here.

Explanation

On the build finding: half right, and the half that was right is now fixed in e631b9f.

Wrong about apps/web. Vercel builds it on every PR and posts a Vercel check — it is green on this PR right now. That is not a workflow file, so a file-based read cannot see it. Renovate also only automerges once every status check has succeeded, so a broken web build blocks the merge via that check.

Right about apps/studio. Vercel's root directory is apps/web, so sanity build genuinely never ran on a pull request. A dependency breaking the Studio build would have gone green.

Added a Studio build step rather than a full pnpm run build: apps/web is already covered, and building it in CI would need env that .env.example cannot satisfy — its required values are empty and fail Zod validation. apps/studio/.env.example carries non-empty placeholders, so seeding from it is enough. Verified locally with the exact command the step runs.

On the other point — that this check becomes the only required one for automerge — it is not: Renovate waits for every check that reports, which here is CI, Vercel, CodeRabbit, SonarCloud, CodeQL and eve-review.

High · intent_missing — .github/renovate.json extends github>sanity-io/renovate-config:automerge, but this diff adds no required status check on main.

Renovate merges a PR as soon as GitHub reports it mergeable, so with no required check on main that is immediately, and dependency bumps reach the production branch before CI reports. The ticket lists requiring Lint, Format, Type Check & Tests as a deliverable and the PR moves it to an unchecked after-merge step, so automerge ships enabled while its gate does not exist. Branch protection is a repository setting and cannot be added in this diff, so the ordering is the fix: configure the required check before Renovate is enabled on the repo, not after this merges.
