ci(coeus): Run the 1365 tests that nothing was running - #344
Conversation
This repository had no general verification. `backend-parity.yml` exercises the WGPU, CUDA and Metal provider contracts on device-specific runners; the rest of the workflows publish or build the book. So 1365 native tests and 18 doctests were committed, maintained, and executed by nothing. All of them pass. So does `cargo fmt --check`, and so does `cargo doc` with `RUSTDOCFLAGS=-D warnings` once three intra-doc links are fixed: `ComputeBackend` was unresolved in coeus-cuda and redundantly qualified in coeus-wgpu, and seven links to `gradcheck` were ambiguous between the function and the module of the same name. Each was run before being wired, so this does not land a workflow that is already red. Clippy is not denied. 76 diagnostics remain, 30 of them a single mechanical `.get(0)` to `.first()` across 22 files, so it runs without `-D warnings`: a regression in a cleared class stays visible while the standing debt does not block a merge. It is raised when the count reaches zero. Found by asking, across the stack, which repositories compile tests that CI never runs -- the question kwavers answered with 92 integration files and 6 run, which had hidden 17 failures.

`coeus-python` fails to link a test binary on Linux with `undefined symbol: _Py_DecRef`. PyO3's `extension-module` deliberately does not link libpython, because a loaded extension takes those symbols from the interpreter; a standalone test binary has no interpreter. It builds on Windows, which links pythonXY.lib regardless, which is why the gate passed locally and failed on the runner. `python-release.yml` owns that crate's verification, and kwavers excludes its own binding crate from the same step for the same reason.

`subprocess.run(..., text=True)` decodes with the locale codepage. Cargo emits UTF-8, so on a Windows console (cp1252) the reader thread dies on the first unmappable byte and the captured stream is lost: Exception in thread Thread-1 (_readerthread): UnicodeDecodeError: 'charmap' codec can't decode byte 0x81 The verdict survives, because it comes from `returncode` -- which is why this went unnoticed. What does not survive is `completed.stderr`, the message printed to explain a failure, at the one moment it is needed. Decoding as UTF-8 with replacement fixes it.

Two failures, both from running a workspace-wide gate on a bare runner. `coeus-wgpu` acquires a GPU adapter and fails with `AdapterUnavailable: No compatible GPU adapter or device could be acquired`. It is not skipped coverage -- backend-parity.yml already runs its check, clippy at -D warnings, nextest and doctests on a runner with mesa-vulkan-drivers installed, which is where a device test belongs. The toolchain was not the one that runs. `rust-toolchain.toml` pins 1.97.0, but the action received no `toolchain` input and defaulted to stable -- its own log line reads `toolchain: stable`. So the runner installed stable with clippy and rustfmt, and rustup then fetched 1.97.0 as a second toolchain on first cargo call, with the components installed for the toolchain that does not run. It now takes the same `RUST_TOOLCHAIN` value and mechanism as backend-parity.yml. The toolchain finding is a review comment on the pull request, verified against the job log rather than taken on assertion.

The single Verify job was killed at its 30-minute limit inside `cargo doc`. The measurement is unambiguous: 26m52s compiling the workspace at the `test` profile, then all 1130 tests in 4.1 seconds. It is compile-bound, and clippy never ran at all. The `test`, `doc` and clippy profiles each require their own compile, so serially the job does not fit any defensible bound. Three jobs carry one apiece and run concurrently. Format gets its own runner so a formatting slip reports in under a minute rather than behind a compile. Dependency debuginfo goes with it. Nothing here steps into a dependency, and full DWARF for the whole graph is the larger half of both compile time and target size. Item: ATLAS-COEUS-CI-UNRUN

How it surfaced
kwavers turned out to compile 92 integration test files and run 6 of them, which had hidden 17 failures — two of them driving a solver at 1.71× its own CFL limit. That prompted the same question of every stack member. coeus and melinoe were the two that ran nothing; melinoe is #21.
It matters here in particular because coeus is kwavers' autograd and tensor dependency — a finite-difference gradient check I ran this week leaned directly on its correctness.
State, measured before wiring
cargo fmt --all -- --checkcargo nextest run --workspacecargo test --doc --workspaceRUSTDOCFLAGS=-D warnings cargo doc --workspace --no-depscargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warningsThe three doc fixes
ComputeBackendwas unresolved incoeus-cuda/src/lib.rs— no import brings it into scope there.coeus-wgpu/src/lib.rs, where it is in scope. Opposite defect, same trait.gradcheckwere ambiguous between the function and the module of the same name; they all mean the function, so they now sayfn@gradcheck.Clippy is not denied
76 diagnostics remain, and 30 of them are one mechanical change —
.get(0)to.first()across 22 files. It runs without-D warnings, so a regression in a cleared class stays visible while the standing debt does not block a merge, and it is raised to denying when the count reaches zero. Landing a red gate would teach people to ignore it.Cheapest gate runs first, so a formatting slip costs seconds rather than a build.
High-level PR Summary
This PR adds a CI workflow to run the 1365 native tests and 18 doctests that were previously not being executed in any automated workflow. The existing
backend-parity.ymlonly tested device-specific provider contracts, leaving the general test suite unverified. The new workflow includes format checking, tests (via nextest), documentation tests, documentation builds with warnings denied, and clippy (without denial) as a ratchet mechanism. Additionally, three documentation link fixes are included: resolving an unresolvedComputeBackendlink in the CUDA crate, removing a redundant qualification in the WGPU crate, and disambiguating sevengradchecklinks to explicitly reference the function rather than the module.⏱️ Estimated Review Time: 5-15 minutes
