Why does the link/button in the { Settings ; Hashtags } dialog box say "Schedule a **rebuild** of your hashtag catalog," but the dialog that pops up says it is merely going to "Schedule an **incremental** scan of your newly added notebooks"

Problem to Solve

The "Schedule Hashtag Scanning" dialog clearly says it is going to do something different from what the button/link to get there says.

My main problem is that I now do not know what is actually going to happen. I really wanted to completely rebuild the database because I am having a separate problem with the Hashtags Search still returning results from deleted (and OneNote Recycle Bin emptied) pages. (I will report that in a separate issue... later. )

Open the dialogs.

Expected Behavior

I expected it to completely delete the old data and completely rebuild it from scratch. If it does not do that, then I would expect the link/button in the { Settings ; Hashtags } dialog to say the same thing as the "Schedule Hashtag Scanning" dialog. You know... Just so we know what we are going to get. 😉

As you can see, at 10:28:52.424, the scan ran and completed. However, the log says: "updating 0 pages, saving 0 tags" Which tells me that it did not, in fact, "rebuild" the database.

After "rebuilding" those tags from deleted pages were still showing up in the search. Yet further evidence that this action does not actually rebuild the database.

Note, this is just my first troubleshooting step, in the larger problem, mentioned above. Right now, I would rather just work on this one step, in this one GitHub issue. My main questions now are:

A) Did the database actually get rebuilt. We've got three votes for "No," and one vote for "Yes." But I still can't be sure which it is.

B) If that database did not get completely rebuilt, should I simply delete the
"C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\OneMore\OneMore.db" file?

my understanding is that it reads every page, not purging the old values. I have seen @stevencohn tell people to close OneNote and delete C:\Users<user>\AppData\Roaming\OneMore\OneMore.db, which triggers a complete rebuild, as this holds the hashtag info.

Well, I just finally got it to finish a complete rebuild of my database, and the Hashtag search results are no longer showing deleted sections and pages. So that's good. That finished my first troubleshooting step for my other problem.

I do want to be clear, that I still think the text in the { Settings ; Hashtags } dialog should still be changed to reflect what it really does. So, the original bug report still stands.

As an aside, I would also like to just give you an update as to how much it took to get this done:

I had to change the name of the original OneMore.db file. Considering that there is only one SQLLite database (that I can find) I have to wonder how many other settings or whatnot I had to throw away in order to fix this one issue. It would be really nice if OneMore had a feature that would cleanly remove only Hashtag data from said database, and then truly rebuild that from scratch. If there is only Hashtag data in that database, then consider what will happen when you do eventually decide to put other data in that database. The fact that it is named OneMore.db instead of Hashtags.db implies that you do plan to add other data to it in the future. There will always be a need for ways to cleanly excise data from a combined SQLLite database file... unless all different groups of data are simply kept in separate files. In which case, the name of this database should probably just be changed to Hashtags.db. (But that's just a suggestion.)

I had to run the rescan twice. The first time it ran for about an hour then said it was done. But it was not. Instead, it had locked up OneNote. It appears that once it locked up OneNote, the scanner task exited and the default message when it exits is "Scan Competed" (or whatnot). I had to completely reboot my computer to get OneNote to start again. You can see that in the OneMore logs below.

You can see that I started the second try at 2:18 this morning, and then went to bed. It finally finished at 12:28 this afternoon. So 10 hours of scanning. (I told you that I have lots of stuff in OneNote. And that is not counting 6 years of class notes, in handwriting, that are all archived in .ZIP files.) I recently ran OneMore's "Data Analysis Report" thing and it told me that I have about 2.7 GB worth of OneNote notebooks currently open. (Note: I just tried to run it again, and it crashed OneNote again. Maybe I am not waiting nearly long enough. But there are no dialogs indicating that it is still working. OneNote just keeps flashing "Not Responding" in the title bar. Which I don't think is a good sign.)

I suspect that one of the reasons that the first hashtag scan crashed OneNote the first time, is that I believed that I could safely continue to use OneNote while the scan was happening. Now, I understand why the dialog suggests that we start said scans at midnight. Perhaps the statements in the dialogs could be more clear about needing to start the scan running, set the computer to never go to sleep or hibernate, and then just don't use the computer. For half of a day.

I should also note that I do not have any intentional hashtags in my notebooks as of yet. Only a few faux hashtags, caused by the fact that humans use the pound sign for things other than hashtags. Here is a screenshot of the OneMore Hashtag Picker:

You can see that many of my "hashtags" are a result of copying parts of OneMore documentation into my OneNote notes.

I should also note that the previous database was 92k while the new database is only 60k. So that is almost exactly 1/3 less data. I have not deleted significant portions of my OneNote notebooks between scans. So I have no idea what could have been taking up that extra 30k in that original OneMore.db file.

Anyway... Now I can start the work of going through my notebooks and finding the "faux hashtags" and marking them with the #SkipHashtags and #KeepHashtags markers, so they don't keep showng up in my hashtag searches. (Thanks for those, by the way.)
