Summary

python dev.py build now rebuilds libglide_ffi and copies it into glide_shared on every build. Before this, it
only did so when no copy existed yet, so local Python tests could silently run against an old build of glide-core
and ffi/.

Issue link

Closes #7430

Features / Behaviour Changes

  • Every python dev.py build installs a libglide_ffi built from the current glide-core and ffi/ sources:
the workaround of running python dev.py clean or deleting python/glide-shared/glide_shared/libglide_ffi.*
before rebuilding is no longer needed.

Implementation

In install_glide_shared (python/dev.py):

  • Removed the dest.exists() check, so the cargo rustc --lib --crate-type cdylib build and the copy into
glide_shared always run. Cargo builds incrementally, so this adds only a few seconds when nothing has changed.
  • Removed the try/except FileNotFoundError around the pre-build library lookup. It only existed to decide whether to
    build.

Limitations

⚪ None

Testing

  • Reproduced the bug locally: python/glide-shared/glide_shared/libglide_ffi.dylib was a stale copy.
  • After python3 dev.py build --client async --mode debug, the installed copy is identical (cmp) to
    the freshly built ffi/target/debug/libglide_ffi.dylib.
  • python3 dev.py lint passes (isort, black, flake8, mypy).
  • Integration tests were not run; the change only affects the local dev build script.

Checklist

Before submitting the PR make sure the following are checked:

  • This Pull Request is related to one issue.
  • Commit message has a detailed description of what changed and why.
  • Tests are added or updated. (dev build script only; verified manually)
  • CHANGELOG.md and documentation files are updated. (internal dev tooling, no user-facing change)
  • Linters have been run (make *-lint targets) and Prettier has been run (make prettier-fix). (python3 dev.py lint; no files Prettier formats were changed)
  • Destination branch is correct - main or release
  • Create merge commit if merging release branch into main, squash otherwise.
  • Make sure to update the documentation in the valkey-glide-docs repository if necessary

`install_glide_shared` only built and copied libglide_ffi into glide_shared when no copy existed there yet, so later builds kept a stale library and local Python tests ran against old glide-core/ffi behavior. Always run the cargo cdylib build and copy the result; cargo's incremental build keeps this fast when nothing changed.

Review state

Ready for human review.
No findings. At 3bf7161 the PR has one new commit, a merge of main, and the python/dev.py diff has not changed: install_glide_shared now always runs the cdylib cargo build and copies the library into glide_shared.

Risk: Low. Only python/dev.py changes, so a mistake would affect local developer builds, not shipped clients or CI publishing.

Open findings: none.

Backport: Not needed. This changes local dev build tooling (python/dev.py) and does not change shipped library behavior.

Walkthrough

install_glide_shared builds and copies the FFI library, then returns its path. build_sync_client uses that path instead of running a separate FFI build and lookup.

Changes: Python FFI build

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and copy the FFI library
python/dev.py
install_glide_shared returns the built library path after copying it to SHARED_PACKAGE_DIR. build_sync_client reuses that path instead of building and locating the library again.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(python): always rebuild libglide_ffi in dev.py build" matches the main change. The summary says install_glide_shared in python/dev.py now runs the cargo build and copy on every build, removing the dest.exists() check. The title is specific, short, and states the fix from the developer's view.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It includes Summary, Issue link (Closes #7430), Features / Behaviour Changes, Implementation, Limitations, Testing, and a completed Checklist. The Summary and Implementation sections explain the change and the reason for it. The Testing section lists the local reproduction, the cmp verification, and the lint run. Integration tests were not run, and the author states this. The author marks the test and docs checklist items as not applicable with a reason.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The change satisfies #7430. install_glide_shared always runs cargo rustc --lib --crate-type cdylib --locked, locates the debug or release output, and copies it into glide_shared. build_sync_client uses the returned path, so the sync package also receives the current library. The destination-exists skip is removed.

Verified locally on 3bf7161: with main's dev.py, renaming an exported symbol in ffi/src/lib.rs and rebuilding left the old symbol in glide_shared/libglide_ffi.dylib and ran no FFI build step; with this branch the step runs and the installed copy is byte-identical to ffi/target/debug/. The no-change cost of the unconditional step is ~0.2 s here (4 s after touching one source file). black, isort, flake8 and mypy pass on dev.py.

This also fixes locally built async wheels, since build_async_client_wheel copies SHARED_PACKAGE_DIR after install_glide_shared runs.

`build_sync_client` ran the same `cargo rustc --lib --crate-type cdylib --locked` build twice: once inside `install_glide_shared` and again itself before copying to glide_sync. Have `install_glide_shared` return the built library path and copy that instead, dropping the redundant build, lookup, and existence check (`find_libglide_ffi` already raises if the file is missing).

Resolve the python/dev.py conflict with #7335 by keeping this branch's install_glide_shared, which returns the built FFI path so build_sync_client no longer builds it twice.
