Wasm build not working on Mac OS

I'm sure I've got something configured incorrectly but not sure what.

I followed the instructions in the Wiki for the WASM build as best I could and got as far as running QtCreator.

I was not sure what to select in the gui-v2 clone for the project but CMakeLists.txt seemed to work.
Yet when I tried to compile, nothing happens. No errors, no outputs.

I have never used QtCreator before so any help would be appreciated.

@blammit and co: do you ever build that on MacOS? Or always on Linux?

I build on Mac, so that does work. Perhaps the emscripten sdk is not integrated somehow? Otherwise there would be at least some output from that.

Which version of Qt do you have installed?

Which version of the emsdk do you have installed?

Have you manually built QtMqtt using Qt For WebAssembly and installed the build artifacts into the Qt For WebAssembly lib dir?

When you run QtCreator and open the gui-v2 project (yes, the CMakeLists.txt file is the correct project file), are you configuring it to build with Qt For WebAssembly? (On the LHS of QtCreator, select Projects tab, choose the "WebAssembly Qt 6.2.4" (soon: "WebAssembly Qt 6.5.2 singlethread") build kit.)

This is all completely new to me so forgive any shortsightedness on my part. And thanks for the guidance.

I should have Qt v6.2.4 installed and activated. Is there a way to confirm this?

I followed the instructions here for installing emscripten sdk and building QtMqtt:

When I run Qt Creator and open the project icon on the left, I see two items shown in red: CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER is set to /usr/local/bin/cmake and CMAKE_GENERATOR is set to Ninja

If I click on Build (for WebAssembly Qt 6.2.4) I see the following popup:

Hi, that "Warning: No compilers set in kit" message suggests to me that the emscripten sdk isn't activated.
I believe that for Qt 6.2.4 the emscripten sdk version should be 2.0.14.

If emscripten isn't properly installed, you may need to do:

cd <emscriptenDir>/emsdk
emsdk install 2.0.14
emsdk activate 2.0.14
./path/to/qtcreator

Afterwards, just the following should suffice:

source <emscriptenDir>/emsdk/emsdk_env.sh
./path/to/qtcreator

Edit: note that you have to start QtCreator from a terminal in which you have sourced the emsdk environment settings, otherwise I don't think it will find it.

Progress.

emsdk is 2.0.14 was already installed and activated.

calling .../Qt/"Qt Creator" did not work.
calling .../Qt/"Qt Creator.app" did not work.
calling .../Qt/"Qt Creator.app/Contents/QtCreator" DID launch Qt Creator.

Exciting Qt Creator from the command line after sourcing the emscrpten environment was what I was missing.

But still failing. This time I get:

CMake project configuration failed. No CMake configuration for build type "Release" found. I tried the other build configurations and same issue there.

and from the terminal window running Qt Creator:

I looked and there is no /Users/qt. Do I need to install Qt or other things in a specific place? I think I used the default and it put it in ~/Qt

I have been building manually like this, invoking qt-cmake and ninja, assuming emsdk is set up and activated:

mkdir ~/build-gui-v2-wasm
cd ~/build-gui-v2-wasm
source ~/emsdk/emsdk_env.sh
~/Qt6/6.2.4/wasm_32/bin/qt-cmake -GNinja  ~/victron/gui-v2/ 
ninja

Does something like that work for you? If not, how far do you get and are there any error messages?

I think what is missing from the instruction is making Qt Creator aware of the emscripten sdk in the QtCreator settings:

I think the following things are also missing in the instructions:

• git submodule update --init
• The fact that QtWebsockets needs to be installed

Added the emsdk to preferences in Qt Creator. Same errors as before.

Command line resulted in the following error:

CMake Error: CMake was unable to find a build program corresponding to "Ninja". CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM is not set. You probably need to select a different build tool.

I don't know if this means anything but I have both a Qt and a Qt6 directory. Qt is where Qt Creator lives. Qt6 has different files.

Did you install both QtCreator and Qt 6.2.4 through the Qt Maintenance Tool? Is there an option to install the Ninja toolchain, also? (Probably under the Tools section in the Maintenance Tool.)

I did the install with the Qt setup app. I did not use the Maintenance tool for anything.

I'm in the process of reinstalling everything. If I select everything the install will consume 25 GB of space and take 20 hours to download. So I've backed off:

no Qt Design Studio
Qt 6.2.4 only, leaving out iOs and Sources which seemed to be the big consumers of space and download time.

All Additional Libraries

All Developer and Designer Tools

I'll rebuild qtmqtt based on instructions in the How to build venus gui v2 WiKI document.

I also see a How to build qt wasm from source but not sure how that fits into the big picture.

Will the build for the local GUI run on a Raspberry PI OS and/or Ubuntu VM? (I have an older MacBook Pro with Intel i9 processor.)

One thing I'm not sure of is where the actual qtmqtt will end up. As I understand it, I need to set that path in Qt Creator. I'm trying to follow the instructions as exactly as possible but there are some omissions. For example there are instructions for qtmqtt for Windows but only fragments for MacOs. Also things like where to clone qtmqtt.git. Instructions for Linux/Mac say to cd to ~/Qt2/build-qtmqtt but that directory does not exist. I did try creating it manually but wasn't sure if I skipped a step that should hav installed it for me.

I'll check back in after getting everything reinstalled and built.
