Write tests for message search

This is a followup to #1662 Implement basic keyword search; we've left tests for that PR as a followup.

I think at this point we can defer the writing of these tests until the next time we're engaged in making changes to this subsystem. As a result, it's not a task that we benefit from tracking in the issue tracker.
