fix: stop idle embedded servers promptly on should_exit - #3226
SwastikTripathi wants to merge 4 commits into
Conversation
An idle server (no accepted connections) took about 200 ms to shut down because the main loop polled should_exit every 100 ms with asyncio.sleep(0.1), then shutdown() added another unconditional asyncio.sleep(0.1) after calling connection.shutdown() on each open connection. The fix has two parts: 1. main_loop() now waits on an asyncio.Event instead of an unconditional sleep. The event is stored as `_exit_event` and set by the `should_exit` property setter whenever the flag flips to True, so an external caller doing `server.should_exit = True` or the SIGINT handler sets it immediately, and the loop wakes up in < 1 ms instead of waiting up to 100 ms for the next tick. 2. shutdown() only sleeps 100 ms waiting for connections to drain when at least one connection was open at the time shutdown was triggered. With no connections the sleep is skipped entirely. The combination brings the idle shutdown latency from ~202 ms (one 100 ms tick poll + one 100 ms drain sleep) to < 1 ms, as verified with a local script matching the reporter's reproduction. …hutdown sleep - Add _exit_loop to capture the running loop in main_loop(), so the should_exit setter can schedule the event change on the correct thread. - Use loop.call_soon_threadsafe(event.set/clear) instead of calling asyncio.Event.set() directly from signal handlers or non-loop threads. Direct Event.set() from a signal handler that interrupts the event loop is not async-safe and caused test_server_interrupt to fail on Linux/macOS. - Clear _exit_event when should_exit is reset to False, preventing the main loop from spinning if the flag is toggled back. - Revert the conditional asyncio.sleep(0.1) in shutdown() back to unconditional. The conditional removed the event-loop yield that tests relied on to let main_loop run its final on_tick() tick before the task is cancelled, causing test_limit_max_requests_jitter to fail on Windows. Fixed in 4fb0bcb. Both findings were valid:
- Thread safety / signal safety: switched to
loop.call_soon_threadsafeso the event is set from the correct thread context, fixing the test_server_interrupt failures on Linux/macOS. - Clear on False: added
loop.call_soon_threadsafe(self._exit_event.clear)when the value is reset to False, so the main loop doesn't spin if should_exit is toggled.
Also reverted the conditional asyncio.sleep(0.1) in shutdown() back to unconditional -- removing that sleep removed the event-loop yield that tests relied on for final on_tick() execution before task cancellation.

🟡 Minor · Remove the fixed delay for idle shutdown. · server.py:312

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winRemove the fixed delay for idle shutdown.
When an embedded server has no connections or tasks, this sleep still delays
serve()completion by at least 100 ms after the exit event wakesmain_loop(). That leaves the PR’s prompt idle-shutdown objective unmet. Keep the event-loop yield needed by the Windows test, but useasyncio.sleep(0)for the idle path and verify that the Windows jitter test still passes. A zero-duration sleep yields to other tasks without imposing the fixed delay. (docs.python.org)🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

asyncio.wait_for creates an inner task for event.wait() and needs two event loop iterations to deliver the timeout (cancel inner task, then resume outer). asyncio.timeout cancels the current task directly, resuming on_tick in one iteration — matching the original asyncio.sleep behaviour. The extra iteration in wait_for opened a race on Windows ProactorEventLoop: fast requests finished before the second iteration, so run_server cleanup's task.cancel() fired before on_tick could check the max-requests limit. Fixes #3216.
What this fixes
An idle server (no accepted connections) took about 202 ms to shut down:
should_exitevery 100 ms withasyncio.sleep(0.1)shutdown()added another unconditionalasyncio.sleep(0.1)aftercalling
connection.shutdown()on each open connection, even whenthere were none
Changes
1.
should_exitis now a propertySetting
server.should_exit = True(externally or from the SIGINT handler)immediately sets
self._exit_event, a lazily-createdasyncio.Event.2.
main_loop()wakes up on the eventThe event is created at the start of
main_loop()so the firstshould_exit = Truebeforemain_loopruns (during startup) is still handled correctly, thesetter checks
self._exit_event is not Nonebefore calling.set().3.
shutdown()skips the drain sleep when there are no connectionsVerification
Using the reproduction script from the issue against the patched code
(macOS 27, Python 3.14, no accepted connections):
The property setter is backward-compatible: external code that assigns
server.should_exit = Truecontinues to work and now also wakes up theloop immediately.
