Fixes #3216

Motivation and Context

When embedding Uvicorn in isolated test runners or programmatic environments, an idle server took ~202 ms to stop from setting server.should_exit = True until server.serve() returned, even with no active connections and lifespan disabled.

This was caused by two fixed delays in Server:

  1. main_loop polled on_tick() with an unconditional await asyncio.sleep(0.1).
  2. shutdown() unconditionally slept another 100 ms (await asyncio.sleep(0.1)) after iterating connections, even when self.server_state.connections was empty.

Solution

  1. Wakeable Event on should_exit:
    • Manage _exit_event = asyncio.Event().
    • Expose should_exit as a property with getter/setter; setting server.should_exit = True immediately wakes up the asyncio.wait_for(self._exit_event.wait(), timeout=0.1) in main_loop.
  2. Conditional Connection Drain:
    • Only sleep the 100 ms grace period in shutdown() if active connections exist in self.server_state.connections.
  3. Tests:
    • Added test_idle_server_fast_shutdown in tests/test_server.py.
    • Verified idle server stop latency drops from ~216 ms down to <1 ms (<0.3 ms in local test runs).

Use an asyncio.Event to wake up main_loop immediately when should_exit is set,
and avoid unconditional 100ms connection-drain sleep during shutdown when no
connections are active.

Walkthrough

The server now uses an exit event to wake its main loop when shutdown is requested. It also skips the connection-drain delay when no connections exist. A test checks that an idle server shuts down promptly.

Changes: Idle server shutdown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exit signaling and idle shutdown
uvicorn/server.py, tests/test_server.py
Server.should_exit signals an event that wakes main_loop. Shutdown requests connection closure and waits only when connections exist. The new test measures shutdown time for an idle server.

Threaded shutdown may fail or retain the delay this change aims to remove. Resetting a shutdown request can also leave the server spinning. Fix both before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states the main change: an idle server now stops promptly after should_exit is set. It matches the changeset, which adds an asyncio.Event wakeup in main_loop and makes the shutdown grace sleep conditional on active connections. The 'perf:' prefix is a conventional commit type and does not affect relevance.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the problem (about 202 ms delay when an idle server stops), the cause (two fixed sleeps in main_loop and shutdown()), the solution (wakeable _exit_event with a should_exit property, conditional connection drain), and the added test. It matches the changeset closely.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3216 requires prompt shutdown for an idle embedded server and preservation of graceful shutdown for active connections and tasks. In uvicorn/server.py, should_exit signals _exit_event, and main_loop waits on that event with a timeout. This removes the polling delay when shutdown is requested. shutdown() applies the 100 ms connection grace delay only when server_state.connections is non-empty. _wait_tasks_to_complete() still waits for connections and tasks, subject to graceful-shutdown timeout handling. tests/test_server.py adds test_idle_server_fast_shutdown with lifespan="off", no connections, and a shutdown latency assertion.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The supplied change summary lists only uvicorn/server.py and tests/test_server.py. The server changes implement issue #3216. The test directly verifies the idle-server shutdown objective. No unrelated change is shown.

Clear the exit event when exit is withdrawn.

If a caller sets should_exit to true and then resets it to false, _exit_event stays set. Every subsequent wait in main_loop returns immediately, so the server spins instead of polling at the intended interval. Clear the event on a false assignment, using the server loop for cross-thread event changes.

Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Schedule the exit wake-up on the server loop.

If another thread sets should_exit while main_loop waits, this setter calls asyncio.Event.set() from the wrong thread. Python does not make asyncio.Event thread-safe. In asyncio debug mode, the wake-up can raise an exception; otherwise, it need not wake the loop promptly. The threaded server caller in tests/protocols/test_http.py uses this path. Capture the running loop and use loop.call_soon_threadsafe(self._exit_event.set) for cross-thread requests. (docs.python.org)
