いまの訳文は和洋まぜこぜになってしまってる印象。組み合わせとしては以下のいずれかでは？

  1. 独裁者と副官
  2. 親分と若頭

優しい終身の独裁者の独裁者と同じ文脈で使われる表現なので、前者がいいと思う。

これ、たぶん元の訳は私だったと思います。 @harupong さんご指摘のとおり、ちょっと不自然なので、前者の案にそろえておいてください。
